Joy Jot #32: Jeep Jot

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I went on a 3-day overlanding jeep trip in Moab. It was my first experience crawling over rocks in a jeep. I liked watching the jeeps in front of us roll up and over the slick rock sandstone and rocky dirt roads. It was amazing watching the vehicles manage the pitch and difficulty of the trail—looking almost like toy jeeps bumping up and over the terrain. Most of the time, one jeep would lead, and others would follow. Because my guy was a newer Jeep driver, it helped him navigate the rigors by following the line of a more experienced wheelman.

We faced some bigger obstacles, which required getting out of the jeeps to survey the situation, setting up spotters, and using walkie-talkies for precise communication. I learned some jeep jargon, like “driver” and “passenger”, which was used to direct the driver on which way to turn the wheel. I watched with curiosity as the men evaluated the terrain and moved rocks to allow the jeeps to pass without injury. They were using rocks to help the jeeps climb over bigger rocks.

I saw two Jeep concepts that applied profoundly to life in this setting.

One, we need each other to overcome some obstacles.

Two, sometimes we need smaller obstacles to overcome larger obstacles. (We need just the right rock to help us get over a bigger one.)

  • Whom have you noticed helping you overcome an obstacle recently?

  • Whom can you ask for help?

  • Looking back, what difficulty did you overcome that prepared you to face a larger problem later?

  • How can you use your knowledge gained by overcoming smaller obstacles to overcome larger obstacles in your life today?

I love that we have each other in this life. I am thankful to friends, family, and strangers who help me overcome obstacles. I have faith in God that he knows where we are on the trail, wants us to grow, and can make all things work for our good. (Roman 8:28, Alma 36:3, D&C 122:7)

I hope you enjoyed this “jeep jot!'“
