Joy Jot #31: What is happening?!

One day back in January, I was skiing with my husband and a young teen family friend. My husband, Lucy*, and I were looping runs at Dollar Mountain in Sun Valley. (Dollar Mountain is Sun Valley Resort’s beginner mountain. P.S. It is too much fun!)

On one run, I was the third to go, so I zoomed down the hill and waited at the bottom of the lift.

I waited and waited a little longer. Finally, my husband showed up and told me what happened.

While skiing down, my husband saw Lucy crash into a little boy. As he arrived on the scene to help, he saw the boy face down and heard him yelling, “What is happening?! What is happening?!”

Isn’t that what we all think sometimes?

The boy was fine, and Lucy felt embarrassed and apologized. Soon, she met up with us.

We laughed about the little boy’s honest response the rest of the day.

“What is happening?!” Haha!

In one of my coaching courses, the instructor talked about reframing our response to obstacles as seeing them as fuel for our growth. Just as muscles need resistance to build strength, pushing against adversity builds our character. We may not like it, but it is reality.

Next time you hit an obstacle, after yelling “what is happening?!” try seeing it as fuel for your growth.

What can you learn?
How can you navigate the problem?
How can you see it differently?
Can you change for the better?

Go eat some affliction for lunch.
