Joy Jot #27: Yin & Yang

While completing a Yin Yoga teacher training course, I have been pondering yin and yang.

The Taijitu (the black-and-white yin-yang symbol) represents the Taoist philosophy of opposing forces finding harmony together. Both yin and yang are needed for wholeness.

The black side of the symbol represents YIN energy. Yin energy is gentle, lunar, quiet, feminine, cool, slow, and soft.

The white side of the symbol represents YANG energy. Yang energy is assertive, solar, loud, masculine, hot, and full of movement.

I am enjoying noticing the yin-yang within my stage of life, the seasons, my daily work, and my exercise.

As this new year begins, I am looking to balance my yin and yang. Too much yang (overactivity, busyness, force) may lead to frustration and burnout. Too much yin (stagnation, laziness, withdrawal) may lead to isolation and depression.

I invite you to consider:

  • In what area of your life do you need more yin?

  • Where do you need more yang?

  • How can you take action?

May your 2026 be balanced and whole,

Amy
